Improving Military Readiness Through Landscape Planning

Identifying off-installation areas to restore and conserve at-risk species, retaining installation mission. Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, USA

Dr. Crist was a key member of a team to support this project and led the component on vulnerability assessment for DoD Legacy Project #14-750. This project piloted the use of predicted species distribution models (SDMs) and the Vista DSS to conduct vulnerability assessment on three installations (Boardman, Eglin, Huachuca). For Eglin the team further developed a planning response example for landscape prioritization and individual site mitigation (on and offsite) featured in a DoD natural resources national webinar. The project produced a lList and predicted distribution maps of at-risk species on installations; a cumulative effects assessment of current and potential future stressors on species over the installations’ landscape context using the Vista decision support system. For Eglin AFB we also produced a sea level rise assessment and landscape prioritization using Marxan. PlanIt Forward can help installations with INRMPs, Joint Land Use Studies, REPI site prioritization, climate resiliency, and putting installations in a landscape context.
