Military lands, because of their heightened degree of protection, have become de facto nature reserves. While the military strives to maintain the natural values of their lands, they are often left “holding the bag” for threatened and endangered species. Further, the location of military lands in coastal and natural environments has increased their vulnerability to the effects of climate change (flooding and wildfire in particular). Dr. Crist’s regional projects typically have included military installations and research work through the Legacy Program created methods and tools for integrating within installation planning (INRMP) with context planning with neighboring jurisdictions (e.g., JLUS), and offsite mitigation planning (e.g., via REPI).
